Initial research Part 2- What’s the difference between a Thriller and a Horror Movie?

One of my fave ways of defining the difference of Thriller and Horror is by saying Thriller premises very often *could happen* (in real life), whereas Horror premises are usually “larger than life”.

In my opinion I feel as if there is a thin line between a thriller and a horror movie for example, some would find Saw to be a horror movie because of all the gory detail that it goes into but others just see as just a thriller movie because of all the suspense it builds.

Initial Research

Here I will be talking about thriller films in general

A genre is ‘a style or category of art, music, film or literature’ *

I feel as if a genre is a theme that a movie follows. For example, a comedy would focus on ways to make the audience laugh and so it would stay in between it’s category. The idea of a genre is to classify which films fit into which category. So in other words it’s a wide variety of literature, movie and television programming that uses anticipation, tension and thrill as the key elements.                                          Okay, so let’s begin with what a thriller actually is. A Thriller is a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as its main elements. Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer’s moods, giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and/or terror. Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced. So basically it’s something that makes you scream out of tension due to suspense but keeps you hooked to find out what’s gonna happen next! Hmm, creating two different contrasting moods at once..

What constitutes a film to be in the thriller genre?

Suspense. I feel, the most important aspect of a thriller film is the anxiety it builds for the audience and this is done in many ways. Firstly the dialogue, In thriller films there tends to be a lot of cliff hangers which draws the audience to the edge of their seats.

Secondly, the music makes the scene intense and as the music builds up so does the suspense as we can see from the clip from Taken. I think that the music plays a big part in influencing the mood of the audience at a particular moment. So the director basically controls the way they want the audience to react to certain scenes in the movie. For example in the Taken scene (0:50) the audience are made to keep at the edge of their seats as the uncertainty of what will happen next is greatly built with the dramatic sound effects which becomes louder and louder as the intensity grows in this scene.

Introduction~

Hii, I’m Rehnuma Hoque. I’m a student at Wanstead High School currently studying AS Media Studies. I have been grouped with three other lovely girls- Nabila, Amrit and Molly (I might upload a pic of them later on). We’re working towards a thriller movie opening which I’m so excited about… nevertheless, ALOT of work will be put in just for that perfect opening. Within this blog I’ll be setting out the research, the plan and the I will evaluate a thriller opening. Me and my group have looked into a couple thrillers and I was really inspired by the ‘Se7en’ movie opening which completely drew me in and sent chills down my spine! Now that’s the sort of affect I want to accomplish with our thriller opening! Right now it almost seems impossible but then again my girls and I are up for the challenge!
